Rose City Comic-Con (Saturday)

Huzzah! Day one of RCCC is complete! And much fun was had by all. My favorite thing about conventions is, of course, THE COSTUMES! I love geeky people letting their nerd flag fly and sharing in our shared "squee" moments.

But now I have a NEW favorite thing! Supporting my independent artist friends! Two of them were at the Con this weekend, hawking their wares, and I think they are both fantastic, so here is my plug for my friends' awesome creative work!

Manny Trembley:
Author, Illustrator, Graphic Artist. Owner of FishTank Books, a new brand of 'bridge' graphic novels designed for the ages 8 to pre-teen, embracing the wonder & imagination of childhood. His newest graphic novel is 'RGB,' a wordless story about life, loss and love. Manny also co-produced 'PX!' Books at Image Comics, which was nominated for two Eisner awards.
(Click here to read more about FishTank Books, or click here to friend them on facebook, or click here to order their books online.)

Kiri Callaghan:
Storyteller, Bard, Author, Performer, and Renaissance Woman. Kiri does... a little of everything! She has her own blog, she contributes to other websites, she vlogs for Geek and Sundry, and her new book 'Alys' cleverly mixes together a modern twist on the classic tale of Wonderland with Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream.

Seriously, check out their stuff. They are both awesome.

But for now, back to costumes!! One of my favorite aforementioned "squee moments" of the day was this:

Cosplay of Dr. Saunders (from Dollhouse) and puppet Angel. Her & her friends have a blog about the travelling adventures of their puppet, now including a picture of me, holding Sir Adorable himself!

Runner-up moment-of-the-day (only because I didn't capture it on film): a tiny 3-4 yo supergirl posing, proudly raising both fists high in the air, in front of an adult HawkGirl, with wings outspread and hammer raised high above her head.

It was a perfect moment.

Unfortunately the highs come with the lows of event work. Mainly that right now, I'm laying flat on my back with heating pads on my back because I am in PAIN and EXHAUSTED from being on my feet all day. Next up is foot soaking! Because I have blisters.

But it was worth it.

[quixotic warning:]
I wish we were all free to express ourselves however we wished, at any moment, without fear of judgement or societal pressure. I love the freedom and the... general goodwill that happens at these events.(like Christmas) We are no longer strangers, we are friends bound by our love of 'nerdom.' And it doesn't matter what you look like, or what your job is, or how skilled you are, or how smart.

It is our "Unicorn City."

And with all the crap I've been hearing from people about sexual harassment and inappropriate behavior at other cons, I was really surprised by how considerate, and polite, and appropriate everyone was. (Granted, I wasn't there at 7 in the morning, or when they opened the doors. I heard there was some craziness.)

Anyway, Gotham reigned supreme today with the most costumed representatives attending the Con. Some of the most popular cosplays today included: Poison Ivy, Batman, Harley Quinn, The Joker, The Riddler, AdventureTime, Steampunk, Wonder Women, My Little Pony, Doctor Who, and Halo.

More pictures!

Other honorable mentions I don't have pictures of: Rapunzel & Belle, the adorable little children, mass effect, gumby, "princess" hawkeye, and all-leather DareDevil, to name a few. There were so many awesome costumes, guys! Whoo!
